There is an increased risk of a future major earthquake in an area that straddles the west of Nepal and India, scientists warn. New data has revealed that the devastating quake that hit Nepal in April did not release all of the stress that had built up underground, and has pushed some of it westwards which was stated in the research “Risk of future Nepal-India earthquake” published in the journal Nature Geoscience and Science. Its authors say more monitoring is now needed in this area. Chris Whitty, speaker for the discussion series will share the findings based on above research.
Chris Whitty has been chief scientific Advisor and Director Research and Evidence Division since 2009. He is responsible within DFID for the quality of technical advice to Ministers and the department across all scientific disciplines. DFID has recently commissioned research led by the University of Cambridge to collect scientific data on earthquake risk in Nepal, this links to some research that has been recently published, as reported by the BBC. Chris will share his perspectives on the earthquake science and further emphasis on preparedness and crisis response to natural disaster. The interaction will benefit those focal persons who are involved in the disaster preparedness.
