Title: Corruption as a Diagnostic of Power: Ethnographic Details of Road Building in the Himalayas

Corruption has been a widely discussed subject in the scholarship of development studies. During the fieldwork of infrastructure of democracy research, local people have repeatedly talked about different forms of corruption in road building projects. The ethnographic research organized in the northwestern Himalaya helps to reflect how corruption furnishes a productive site to investigate and interpret the relational space of state practices.
In this discussion series, the speaker will discuss the practices of ‘consensus collusion’, and ‘patronage democracy’ commonly annotating as corruption, and their embeddedness in everyday life in the northwestern part of Nepal.

Mr. Tulasi Sharan Sigdel is the Director of Studies at NASC. He is doing research on Infrastructure of Democracy: State Building as Everyday Practice in Nepal’s Agrarian Districts, and Political Economy of Local Autonomy in Nepal. His research interests include democratic practices, local governance, development, and cultural politics of state building from the grassroots.
